Champions League Betting Guide: League Phase, Ties and Settlement

Champions League betting looks like ordinary football betting until a tie goes to extra time. Then the difference between markets settled on 90 minutes and markets settled on who goes through becomes very real, and a lot of bettors find they backed the wrong one. The competition also changed shape from the 2024-25 season, so older advice about group-stage betting no longer fits.

This guide explains the current format in general terms, the markets that come with it, and how two-legged ties, extra time and penalty shoot-outs are settled, with the arithmetic shown. The basic football markets are covered in how to bet on football and are not repeated here.

How the competition is structured

From 2024-25, the old group stage of eight groups of four was replaced by a single league phase with 36 clubs in one table. Each club plays eight matches against eight different opponents, four at home and four away. The opponents are drawn from four seeding pots, two from each pot, so no two clubs face exactly the same schedule. That makes 144 league-phase matches in total (36 x 8 / 2).

When the league phase ends:

  • The clubs finishing 1st to 8th go straight into the round of 16.
  • The clubs finishing 9th to 24th play a two-legged knockout phase play-off for the remaining eight places.
  • The clubs finishing 25th to 36th are eliminated and, unlike under the old format, do not drop into the Europa League.

From the round of 16 onwards, the round of 16, quarter-finals and semi-finals are two-legged ties, and the final is a single match at a neutral venue chosen in advance. League-phase position also feeds into the knockout bracket, and a higher finish generally earns the right to play the second leg at home in the early rounds.

UEFA scrapped the away goals rule from the 2021-22 season. If a two-legged tie is level on aggregate after the second leg, it goes to 30 minutes of extra time and then, if still level, a penalty shoot-out.

League phase markets

With 36 clubs in one table, bookmakers offer finishing-position markets that did not exist under groups: to finish in the top 8, to finish in the top 24, to be eliminated in the league phase, and to finish top of the league phase. Names vary between sportsbooks, so check exactly which positions a market covers.

The margin check is the same as for any position market. In a fair top 8 book, the implied probabilities of all 36 clubs add up to 800%. A top 24 book should total 2,400%, and an elimination book 1,200%. Add up the prices you see, divide by the fair total and you have the overround. A club priced at 1.30 to make the top 24 is rated at 76.9%.

Because every club plays a different set of opponents, the table can mislead for a while. A side with three points from two games may have faced the two strongest clubs in its draw, while another has six points from two easy fixtures. Look at the remaining opponents, not just the current position. Goal difference is also the first tie-breaker on points, so a big win in an early round can carry real weight later.

UEFA schedules every match on the last matchday of the league phase to kick off at the same time. Clubs on the edge of the top 8 or the top 24 may change approach during the game as results elsewhere come in, which is worth remembering if you bet in-play.

Two-legged ties: reading the second leg

In a two-legged tie the goals from both matches are added together. That makes the second leg a different betting problem from a normal match, because the two teams start with different aims.

Take a tie where Team A won the first leg 2-1 at home. Team B now hosts the second leg. Here is what each 90-minute result in that second leg means for the tie:

  • Team A wins or draws: Team A goes through after 90 minutes.
  • Team B wins by exactly one goal: aggregate level, extra time follows.
  • Team B wins by two or more: Team B goes through after 90 minutes.

Suppose the second-leg prices are Team B 2.05, Draw 3.50 and Team A 3.60. The implied probabilities are 48.8%, 28.6% and 27.8%, a book of 105.1%. The 'To Qualify' market might show Team A 1.40 and Team B 3.10, which is 71.4% and 32.3%, or 103.7% in total.

Compare the two. A draw or Team A win in the second leg adds up to about 56% before the margin is removed, yet Team A is rated at over 70% to qualify. The gap is the extra-time scenario: Team B wins by one and Team A can still go through in extra time or on penalties. The other useful link is with handicaps. Team B qualifying inside 90 minutes is the same outcome as Team B -1.5 on the second-leg Asian handicap, so you can compare that price with the qualification market. Point spread and handicap betting explains how -1.5 settles.

To qualify versus 90-minute markets

This is the rule that causes most disputes. In knockout ties, almost every market is settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time: the match result, both teams to score, over/under goals, handicaps, correct score, cards, corners and most player markets. Extra time and penalties do not count for any of them.

Markets that do include extra time and penalties carry names such as To Qualify, To Progress, To Reach the Final or To Lift the Trophy. Many bookmakers also offer a method of qualification market, with six outcomes: each team to go through in 90 minutes, in extra time or on penalties.

A worked example shows how far apart the two groups can be. The second leg ends 1-1 after 90 minutes, which levels the tie, and Team B scores in extra time to win 2-1 on the night:

  • Second-leg match result: the draw wins.
  • Over 2.5 goals: loses, because only two goals were scored in 90 minutes.
  • Both teams to score: yes.
  • Team B to qualify: wins.
  • Team B to qualify in extra time: wins; in 90 minutes or on penalties: loses.

Goals in a penalty shoot-out never count towards any goals market, team total or goalscorer bet. They only settle shoot-out markets.

Outright, stage and top scorer markets

The outright winner market opens months before the knockout rounds and stays live until the final. Many bookmakers offer each-way on it, with terms such as 1/2 the odds for reaching the final, though terms vary. A £5 each-way bet, £10 in total, on a club at 12/1 (13.00 decimal, +1200 American) that loses the final returns £35 from the place part, £5 x 7, a £25 profit. If the club wins the final, the return is £65 plus £35, £100 in total and £90 profit. The rules are set out in each-way bets explained.

Stage of elimination markets ask how far a club will go: out in the league phase, in the play-off round, in the round of 16, and so on up to winner. They suit bettors with a view on a mid-ranked club that is unlikely to win the competition but has a kind path.

Top goalscorer markets usually count goals from the league phase onwards. Qualifying rounds are often excluded, but not always, so check. Dead heat rules apply to ties. A scorer whose club is knocked out in February stops adding goals, which is why players at clubs with a deep run ahead tend to be shorter than their scoring rate alone would suggest.

What to weigh before a Champions League match

Rotation works in both directions. A club may rest players in a league match before a big European night, or rest them in a dead league-phase fixture once qualification is settled. Check the domestic schedule either side of the match, a point covered from the English side in our Premier League betting guide.

Comparing clubs from different leagues is harder than comparing two sides from the same division. They rarely meet, so there is less shared form to judge them on, and league table positions say little about relative strength across countries. Underlying numbers such as expected goals (xG) help, but they are measured against domestic opponents of different quality.

Game state shapes second legs. A side protecting a two-goal lead often sits deeper, and the trailing side has to commit players forward, which can mean a slow first hour and an open final half hour. That is useful for in-play betting, though prices react quickly. If you prefer to lock in part of a winning position as a tie develops, read our guide to hedging and cash out first.

Before you place a Champions League bet

Run through these points before confirming the slip:

  • Decide whether you are betting on the 90 minutes or on the tie, and choose the market name that matches.
  • In a second leg, write down the aggregate score and which results lead to extra time.
  • For league-phase bets, check each club's remaining opponents rather than the current table alone.
  • For outrights and top scorer bets, check each-way terms, dead heat rules and whether qualifying rounds count.
  • Work out the implied probability of the price and compare it with your own estimate.

Sports betting is legal in some countries and US states and restricted or banned in others. In India the rules differ by state and some states ban online betting. Check the law where you live and use only licensed operators. Midweek European football adds a lot of extra matches to the week, so keep to the limits you set and visit our responsible gambling page if betting stops feeling like entertainment.

Frequently asked questions

Do Champions League bets include extra time and penalties?

Most do not. Match result, goals, BTTS, handicaps and player markets are settled on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. To Qualify, To Progress and To Lift the Trophy include extra time and penalties.

Does the away goals rule still apply in the Champions League?

No. UEFA removed it from the 2021-22 season. A tie level on aggregate after two legs goes to extra time and then penalties, whatever the away goals.

How many clubs go through from the league phase?

Twenty-four. The top eight go straight to the round of 16 and the clubs placed 9th to 24th play a two-legged knockout phase play-off for the other eight places.

Do penalty shoot-out goals count for over/under bets?

No. Shoot-out goals do not count for goals markets, team totals or goalscorer bets. They only settle markets about the shoot-out itself.

What is the difference between Team A to win and Team A to qualify?

To win settles on the 90-minute result of that one match. To qualify settles on which team goes through over the whole tie, including extra time and penalties if needed.
