The Lede: Implications of Osweiler’s Return to Denver

Less than 18 months ago, Brock Osweiler was eager to leave Denver, inking a four-year $72 million deal with the Texans, ostensibly becoming Houston’s quarterback of the future. One complete failure of a season later, the 26-year-old is back in Bronco colors after being cut by the Browns on September 1st and agreeing to sign with Denver for the veteran minimum.

In his lone season in Houston, the former second-round pick was downright awful: 59.0% completion-percentage, 2,957 passing yards, 15 TDs, and 16 INTs. His poor play consistently held back a talented Texans roster. Looking to get out from all the guaranteed money in Osweiler’s contract, Houston was willing to part ways with a second-round pick just to get the Browns to take his ludicrous deal off their hands. Up until Week 3 of the preseason, Browns coach Hue Jackson appeared to be prepping Osweiler to start for Cleveland. But two underwhelming performances in the preseason — 12/22 for 67 yards and one INT — led to the Browns tabbing rookie DeShone Kizer as their starter for Week 3 of the preseason, and ultimately, Week 1 of the regular season. Now back for a second stint in Denver, should you expect Osweiler to be anything more than a backup to Trevor Siemian? Takeaway: Stop with this nonsense. If Paxton Lynch were not injured, and undrafted rookie Kyle Sloter were not the only other healthy QB on the roster (at the time), Osweiler might still be looking for work. Sure, Paxton Lynch wasn’t very impressive in the preseason (16/24 for 90 yards), but Denver is not ready to give up on their 2016 first-rounder. And even though Siemian may not have “franchise QB” written all over him, he’s proven to be much better than Osweiler.
