The Lede: Dodgers Continue Stumbling; Time to Panic?

The Los Angeles Dodgers lost 3-1 to the Arizona Diamondbacks last night, marking a series sweep for the D-backs. It was also the Dodgers’ sixth straight loss, and 11th setback in their last 12 outings.

Meanwhile, the D-backs have now won 13 consecutive games and have a stranglehold on the first NL Wild Card spot. The Nationals have also continued their solid play, winning eight of their last 11, and now only sit seven games back of the Dodgers for the top seed in the NL. The D-backs current win-streak isn’t even the most impressive in baseball. The Cleveland Indians, winners of 14 straight, are finally playing up to their potential. They still sit three games behind the Astros, though, who are enjoying a little seven-game win-streak of their own. With all these other World Series contenders soaring and the Dodgers reeling, is it time to reconsider your World Series bets? Takeaway: Read this very carefully: there is no reason to jump off the Dodgers’ ship, but there’s also no reason to climb aboard, either. Just stay exactly where you are. Look, the Dodgers were winning games at an unsustainable rate. Before they hit this roadblock, LA was 91-36, putting them on pace to tie the 1906 Cubs and 2001 Mariners for the most wins in a single season. If anything, those who have the Dodgers to win the World Series should be thrilled to see these struggles happening now, when there are still 23 games left to sort it out. This is clearly how the sportsbooks view the situation, as they aren’t budging on the Dodgers’ World Series futures. (You can see for yourself using our handy World Series Futures Tracker.) That’s why now is not the time to go out and lay any money on the Dodgers. With very little increased value coming from their recent struggles, it’s not worth it.
